Financial literacy is at an all time low in this country.  The National Council on Economic Education tested about 1,000 adults and high-school students on their knowledge of basic economic principles.  What they evaluated was astounding.

Adults averaged 57% correct answers, while high-school students scored an average 48%.  The poor scores by adults are especially disconcerting because young people lean heavily on their parents and other adults for financial guidance. (Credit Union Magazine August 2000)

The evidence clearly states how vital it is to educate our young people early and often.  Superior Choice Credit Union is facing this challenge by implementing an on-site school credit union in an effort to provide an authentic learning experience for students and to assist them in developing practical skills beyond the classroom. It also stresses the importance of saving money, the responsibility of a job, and the concept of teamwork. SCCU is currently working in a partnership with area schools by operating an office of the credit union for one hour, one day a week.

For the 2008-2009 school year, we have programs set up at Superior High School, Superior Middle School, Mellen, Lake Superior, Northern Lights, Bryant, Cooper, Great Lakes, Maranatha, and Four Corners Elementary Schools.

If you have any questions regarding the School Credit Union Program, feel free to contact Tanya Martineau or Missy Brand (Superior) at (715) 398-8935 or Cim Thompson (Mellen) at (715) 274-2781.

SCCU also supports the brass|STUDENT PROGRAMsponsored by the Wisconsin Credit Union League. The brass|STUDENT PROGRAM promotes responsible personal financial management and teachers can use it to help students achieve the state's Model Academic Standards for Personal Financial Literacy.

Through the brass|STUDENT PROGRAM, League member credit unions help to deliver financial information to high schools in the form of brass|MAGAZINE - a young adult lifestyle money magazine designed to teach high school students about the money side of life™. Read by hundreds of thousands of young adults across the nation, brass content is written for young adults by young adults.

In addition to offering classroom sets of brass|MAGAZINE to high schools, the STUDENT PROGRAM also provides access to an online Teacher Resource Center to help educators across the nation network and share ideas about teaching financial concepts. The program also provides an online Student Resource Center that allows students to browse scholarship opportunities provided by credit unions, as well as connect with other young adults across the nation on money-related issues.
