The 2017 Great Debt Pay Down challenge has concluded! We are taking a break from the Great Debt Pay Down to pursue other opportunities for our members in partnership with LSS Financial Counseling. Please stay tuned to our website and other communications for information on upcoming events!

Debt can be an easy trap to fall into—we’ve all been there. It affects a wide cross-section of people—from high income professionals, to those just starting out in the workforce. Debt can be stressful; debt can be overwhelming. But with some guidance and some time, you can get on a path to free yourself from the burdens of debt and take control of your financial wellness.

This is where The Great Debt Pay Down comes in. It is not a quick fix. It is not just a contest to win money. The Great Debt Pay Down will change your relationship with money.

Over the next year you can take advantage of:

  • Individualized Financial Counseling: We’ll pair you up with a financial counselor with LSS Financial Counseling Service in order to help you gain the tools for a healthy financial lifestyle.
  • Group Educational Seminars: Throughout the year, we will be hosting seminars on a variety of financial topics. Join us in sharpening your financial skills and connecting with others in the program.
  • Guided Progress: The program is designed to help all participants conquer their debt throughout the year-long process.

The Great Debt Pay Down is a year-long challenge that is open to SCCU members and non-members alike who reside in or are employed in Ashland, Bayfield, Burnett, Douglas, and Iron Counties in Wisconsin as well as the southern portion of St. Louis County in Minnesota. Commitment to the program includes a minimum quarterly visit with a LSS Financial Counselor and attending a minimum of four group education sessions throughout the year.

The $3,000 grand prize winner will be the person whose debt goes down the most in relation to their income during the year-long program. There will be $1,500 and $500 for the second and third place winners as well. Prize money will be allocated to Lutheran Social Services on the winner’s behalf to apply toward a Debt Management Plan (DMP) or directly to the winner’s creditors/borrowers as determined by a plan developed by the LSS Financial Counselor and the Great Debt Pay Down participant.

No matter who wins, all participants who complete the program will be rewarded with a roadmap for lifting themselves out of debt and moving toward their financial goals.
