Youth Month: Teach your little owls to fly with money talks

Youth Month 2017 Website Banner

The first step to teaching your kids about money is talking about money.

“The most effective way to teach is by having frequent discussions and don’t ever lecture,” said Ted Beck, president and chief executive of the National Endowment for Financial Education, in a recent Wall Street Journal article. “Look for teachable moments and always be willing to answer questions.”

Unfortunately, this can also be the hardest.

DATCP: The IRS will not call and threaten you

The Wisconsin Department of Agriculture, Trade, and Consumer Protection is warning Wisconsin residents against falling for fake phone calls from the IRS.

From the DATCP website:

"Despite a recent lull, fake Internal Revenue Service (IRS) phone calls are back. This nationwide scam appeared to take a temporary break following the crackdown on a foreign call center last year, but the Consumer Protection Hotline at the Wisconsin Department of Agriculture, Trade and Consumer Protection (DATCP) has recently received a number of reports of these types of scam attempts.

DATCP asks Wisconsin residents to watch for phone calls demanding payment or threatening legal action for unpaid taxes and to hang up on these scammers. Given that the tax season is about to wrap up, consumers should be on guard against calls that use this as part of their ploy."

For more details and to read the entire press release, click here to read more information on the DATCP website.

Go green with eStatements!

Did you know you can receive your statements online?

Why Bother with the Mail?
Get your statements when you want them, online.

Helps protect against Identity Theft
No paper to shred, no one going through your garbage.

Here’s How
Use the eStatements Enrollment page to sign up to receive your SCCU account statements electronically through It’s Me 247 online banking. eStatements give you access to up to 12 months’ worth of account statements, so that you can view, print, or even save them to your local computer if you wish.

To sign up for eStatements, log in to your It's Me 247 online banking account. Click the "Info Center" tab. Under the "My Preferences" header, click the "eStatement Options" link at the bottom of the list.

On the eStatement Options page, choose the enrollment option you wish from the list at the bottom of the page. Enter your email address, then click "Accept." You can immediately view your statements now, or return to It’s Me 247 at a later time and click the eStatements button on the main menu.

Separate help will be available while viewing your statements, to explain the e-Statement viewing and printing options.

A notification email will be sent to you each month or quarter (depending on when you would normally receive your account statement). For security reasons, the statement itself will not be attached to the email; you must log in to It’s Me 247 using your account number and password to view statements from our secure server.

If you have already signed up for eStatements, you can use this page to change the enrollment option you’ve selected, or un-enroll completely so that you will begin receiving your statement via the regular mail again as before.

Beware of phone and email phishing scams!

According to the Federal Trade Commission, "When internet fraudsters impersonate a business to trick you into giving out your personal information, it’s called phishing. Don't reply to email, text, or pop-up messages that ask for your personal or financial information. Don’t click on links within them either – even if the message seems to be from an organization you trust. It isn’t. Legitimate businesses don’t ask you to send sensitive information through insecure channels."

Superior Choice Credit Union to host “Great Debt Pay Down” challenge in partnership with LSS Financial Counseling

Great Debt Pay Down web banner

In an effort to work toward building a financially healthy community, Superior Choice Credit Union and LSS Financial Counseling are pairing up once again to host the Great Debt Pay Down challenge in 2017.

In short, the Great Debt Pay Down is a year-long competition to see who can lower their debt-to-income ratio by the greatest percentage. The challenge consists of attending at least quarterly individualized financial counseling sessions with an LSS financial counselor and attending group education seminars on a variety of topics. The top three participants who lower their debt-to-income ratio the most will receive $3,000; $1,500; or $500 toward further paying down their debts.

The Great Debt Pay Down is not just a contest to win money, however. The challenge is designed to change each participant’s relationship with money in an effort to help conquer debt.

“Part of our mission as a credit union is to provide ways for our members, and others, a way to become financially well educated,” Superior Choice Credit Union President/CEO Gary Elliott said. “Not only do we want Superior Choice Credit Union to succeed, but we want individuals to be empowered financially as well. It’s a win-win situation.”

The Great Debt Pay Down is a year-long challenge that is open to SCCU members and non-members alike who reside in or are employed in Ashland, Bayfield, Burnett, Douglas, and Iron Counties in Wisconsin as well as the southern portion of St. Louis County in Minnesota. There is no fee associated with participating in the program.

Those who are interested in participating in the program should visit https://www.superiorchoice.com/GDPD to view Great Debt Pay Down challenge details and to download a printable application. Applications to participate in the 2017 Great Debt Pay Down challenge are due back to the credit union no later than Friday, January 27, 2017.
